Girlfriends Getaway Guide: NYC

It’s no secret that New York City is one of my favorite places to visit. It is jam packed full of adventure for couples, families, and especially a group of girlfriends looking for a fun getaway! To share in the excitement I’ve experience in the city, I’ve put together a fun little guide for a girlfriends getaway to New York City.

What to do.

Take a stroll around the MoMA Van Gogh’s Starry Night, Andy Warhol pieces, and Monet’s Water Lillies. You can even see Picasso’s piece that Rose mentions in Titanic. You know, the “Something Picasso.”
If you’re a fan, take a Sex and the City Tour. You’ll see spots made famous by the popular series, including shops, bars, and even Carrie’s place. A perfect tour for a girls getaway!
A great way to explore some of Manhattan (and other New York boroughs) neighborhoods is on a food tour. Stroll around neighborhoods like Little Italy, Greenwich Village, and others while eating your way through the tour. Neighborhood Food Tours are great to see and eat at spots you may not have on your own.
The Metropolitan Museum of Art is an incredible place to visit in New York City. It is chock full of all variations of art from all over the world from all eras. To take the cake, they typically offer an exhibit related to some sort of art making a visit to The Met a great addition to your girls getaway.

What to eat.

Even though everyone goes to Serendipity for the frozen hot chocolate, they have amazing meatloaf and chicken pot pie. Don’t pass up on one of these dishes!
Gallagher’s Steakhouse in the Theatre District is a great spot for steak and a cocktail. The swanky decor, insane meat locker, and location make it s great spot for a girls night of fun after a Broadway production.
Ellen’s Stardust Diner is a great spot for an upbeat and lighthearted time. They have delicious burgers, and great entertainment.
Head over to the made famous by Meg Ryan in Harry Met Sally Katz’s Deli, and enjoy one of their sandwiches while you’re out exploring neighborhoods in Manhattan.
Rolf’s German Restaurant is a really cool spot to check out in the winter. They do some over the top decorating for Christmas, and have a highly sought after bar where they serve giant beers. Ha!

What to see.

Check out a production on Broadway! If you’re not a seasoned theatre-goer, I strongly recommend seeing a musical. One of my current favorites for a girlfriends night out is Waitress or Kinky Boots. Both have amazing music and wonder stories!
Macy’s Herald Square is a must for any trip to New York City, especially a girls trip! My favorite aspect of this amazing building, aside from its location right near the Empire State Building an Flat Iron Building, are the incredible wooden escalators!
A walk across Brooklyn Bridge is always a fun addition to a New York trip. Stroll across with friends taking in the sights of the East River, Brooklyn, and Manhattan.
What better to see to empower the ladies than Lady Liberty herself! Catch a glimpse of her with a free ride on the Staten Island Ferry, think How to Lose a Guy in Ten Days, or reserve a spot to climb up to her crown!
Top of the Rock is hands down my favorite place to catch amazing views of Manhattan and beyond. From here you can see the Empire State Building, Central Park, and on a clear day, the Statue of Liberty. Stop by for views both morning and night for two very different, albeit beautiful views of the city.

What to buy.

Manolo’s anyone? Scoop up those shoes made uber famous by Carrie Bradshaw at Bergdorf Goodman.
Buy the ultimate souvenir, and splurge on diamonds, or silver, at Tiffany’s on Fifth Avenue. Go ahead, and have breakfast there while you’re at it.
There is the sweetest little Christmas shop in Little Italy. You can purchase ornaments, decor, books, and other Christmas trinkets to take back home to remember your trip by.
If you go to the city during the holidays, there will be markets on what seems like every corner. My favorite buy? The vast array of scarves at holiday markets
Flowers from a corner market

What to wear.

Winter: Layers, layers, layers. Gloves, scarves, mittens, coats, and waterproof shoes to save you from the cold snow. I even love to wear rain boots during this season because they are warm and keep my feet from getting wet. However, Ugg now offers waterproof boots! Life saving during this season.
Spring: Light sweaters and scarves are perfect for New York in the Spring. You’ll be able to keep warm during the cooler parts of the day, then remove layers when you need to.
Summer: Easy to wear light dresses are great for NYC summer. Pair them with comfy walking shoes for the day or dressy sandals for the evening.
Fall: Breakout your favorite riding boots for Fall in the City. Stroll across Central Park to see the changing leaves in your Fall cardigan sweater and scarf.
Theatre: Dressing for the theatre is a fun New York experience. Some don’t take it as seriously as me, but prefer to dress to impress when going out for a show. I amp up my wardrobe with a fur vest in the winter with heeled boots, or a classier dress and heels in the summer.
